General Questions

What is WAC?
The Wholesale Applications Community (WAC) is an open global alliance made up of leading communications companies including network operators, device and network equipment manufacturers. WAC is committed to making it easier for developers to innovate by using operator network APIs delivered by a single cross-operator API platform. Concentrating in Asia for now, WAC also supports a HTML5 based application platform.

WAC's payment API delivers a simple, safe and easy-to-use payment experience for customers across both fixed and mobile networks that helps drive conversion rates and repeat purchases. WAC centralizes the development, testing and submission process and allows developers to reach potentially millions of customers worldwide with unified terms and conditions that covers all WAC member operators.

What are WAC Apps?
A WAC App looks like any other mobile application, but is written using web technologies. WAC Apps can run on any smart phone for which a WAC runtime is available. Almost any type of mobile application can be written using WAC's Apps platform with the exception of games that use a lot of graphics.

What is the Payment API?
Operator billing is the easiest way to charge users for digital content. There is no need for the user to enter a credit card number of password, the user only has to confirm the purchase and it will be put on their phone bill. It even works if the user is buying something on a PC or tablet in which case we send the user a one-time PIN via SMS. This ease-of-use results in higher conversion rates and therefore more revenues.

Which developers are using WAC? Do you have any case studies?
A number of developers are using WAC's Payment API today - large brands such as Fashion TV, personal content providers such as SportOn, games developers such as Genera and ARX and music services such as Quello. As we continue to rollout the payment API to new markets we expect more and more large content owners to adopt the WAC payment API as a standard means of supporting operator billing due to the high rate of conversion and the cross platform support.

What is the WAC business model?
WAC is not-for-profit organisation and today we are fully funded from membership fees.

Can any developer sign up to WAC?
Yes, any developer can register on the WAC website. Because we are working with payments, we will have to verify your account details before you can start making live transactions.

What do I need to do to sign up with WAC?
To sign up you just need a valid e-mail address. Registering will give you full access to all documentation, SDKs and tools. To receive payments you will need a valid bank account.

Do you charge a sign up fee?
No, we do not charge a sign-up fee

Who are the WAC members?
You can find an up to date list of our members here

Why aren’t WAC doing anything in LatAm/China/India?
China Mobile, China Unicom, Vodafone, Telefonica and America Movil are all large players in these countries and also WAC members. Our current focus is indeed on US, Europe, Korea and Japan, but we hope to launch our services in these other markets soon.

Where do I go to find out more?
You can find all details of our product and how to use it on www.wacapps.net.

What can I do via the www.wacapps.net web site?
Everything you need to use our Payment API or to publish WAC apps can be found on the WAC website. This includes documentation, SDK's, testing tools, app publishing tools, reporting tools and revenue settlement reports.

What can we expect to see from WAC in the coming year?
Our main priority for the coming year are to roll-out the Payment API worldwide, launch our next set of API's including Location and Authentication starting with a subset of operators first and to monitor the progress of the WAC Apps and roll-out globally if our roll-out in Asia proves successful.
